Shader Review: Advanced Gold Shader v1.2

The Advanced Gold Shader v1.2 by Jim Morren is a realistic gold shader made for the Cycles render engine. It has realistic qualities and very nice control over them. Continue reading to see my full review and comparison.

Note: I am using the review format that BlenderNation uses.

Value

For me, the price is where this shader wins. This shader has a lot of flexibility when it comes to the different types of gold it can make. Sure, you could argue it could be closer to $5, But if you look into the node setup for the shader, you can tell Jim put a lot of work into this shader.

Usability

Like most shaders, this is extremely easy. All you need to do is append the shader to your scene. In terms of the shader’s usability, like I said, the shader has a lot of flexibility. You can create old, oily gold or new, polished gold. And Jim has created some really great presets that he has shared on the product page. However, it’s one downside is it’s complexity. It took me a while to figure out how all the options worked.

Realism

This shader is realistic! The realism is so much better than any other gold shader out there for Blender. You just can’t beat it. Again, the control you have over the shader helps the realism too. For example, if you need an oily gold for an old 18th century lamp, this shader can do that.

Comparison

Here is where we will see just how good this shader is. I will be using Jim’s shader and the gold shader by Eduardo Maldonado. I am using the default values for Eduardo’s shader. I will also use different models to showcase low and high detail and different lighting conditions. I however, did not test either of these shaders with lamps only, as they did not deliver good results. Let the test begin!

NOTE: All of the tests were made using sIBL HDRIs. The HDRI used is below each photo. Lucy courtesy of Stanford University

Conclusion

As you can see, this shader really does deliver realistic results. The color is more accurate and you also get a slight bump as well as oiliness. If you haven’t purchased this already, I would highly recommend doing so.
